Come cozy up with us for Flannel & Flavors, a fall evening filled with Appalachian flavors, fascinating folklore, and a little mountain mystery!
Proceeds from this special event will support the inaugural Sullivan County Extension Awards & Appreciation Banquet, planned for February 2027. The banquet will celebrate the people who make our Extension programs thrive, including 4-H members and volunteers, Family and Consumer Education Clubs, Master Gardeners, livestock producers, community partners, and many more.
Come hungry! The evening will feature an assortment of savory biscuit fixin’s, including pimento cheese, apple-braised BBQ pork, pumpkin and apple butter, maple sausage, fresh tomatoes, and more. Enjoy country ciders and finish the evening with a festive candy apple bar.
But the food is only part of the fun! Melody Rose will take guests on a journey through the history, folklore, and traditions of Old Hallow’s Eve and Southern Appalachian folklore. Ever wondered why we carve jack-o’-lanterns, go trick-or-treating, or bob for apples? What old mountain signs were believed to foretell a hard winter? And what exactly is Granny Magic? Travel through time to discover how ancient customs became the Halloween traditions we know today, while exploring the wit, wisdom, superstitions, and stories passed down through generations of Southern Appalachian families. Blending history with personal stories and mountain traditions that remain alive today, Melody will share a spirited look at the customs that have shaped both Halloween and our Appalachian heritage.
Pull on your favorite flannel, bring your appetite, and join us for an evening of good food, good stories, and a little Appalachian magic!
