Beaver rewilding and beyond: Decision-support for managing “rangewaters” in the western United States

 

Abstract

Rangeland waters – hereafter rangewaters - are natural water sources in rangelands, including headwater streams, riparian zones, and wet meadows. Rangeland watersheds cover up to 80% of the total watershed area in western dryland regions, and thus rangewaters represent a critical component of the water system in the West. Healthy rangewaters store water locally, create habitat for threatened species, are fire refugia, and attenuate flooding. Monitoring rangewaters is notoriously difficult due to their wide dispersal across remote areas and their seasonal variability. There are major knowledge gaps about rangewater conditions across the landscape, which limits effective decision-making by rangeland managers. In this talk, I present our group’s development of a satellite-based observatory of rangewaters for the sagebrush biome that includes Artificial Intelligence-based workflows, time-series datasets, and visualization and statistical tools. These systematic measurements of rangewaters provided by satellites fill a major gap in water resource monitoring, and I demonstrate how these measurements can be integrated into decision-making around diverse management topics, such as beaver rewilding, conservation, and wildfire resilience.
