In 2000, Lhakpa Sherpa became the first Nepali woman to summit Mt. Everest and survive. Since then she has summited Mt. Everest more than any woman in history, 11 times. A resident of West Hartford, CT, Lhakpa Sherpa has also registered her own Connecticut guiding business called Hiking With Lhakpa. She keeps climbing in pursuit of a better life for herself and her children, to champion Nepali women and girls.

 

In 2024, Netflix released MOUNTAIN QUEEN: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa. The film tracks Lhakpa’s historic mountaineering history against her record-breaking 10th summit to reveal a rich personal history – from her childhood as an unprotected girl denied an education, to her experience as an immigrant in America and survivor of intimate partner violence, to her fight to reclaim her agency and independence and live as a fearless example to her teenage daughters.

 

She is as exceptional as she is relatable and perhaps the broadest umbrella for her relatability is her absolute determination to rise above her circumstances. Lhakpa inspires us to climb higher, reach farther, pursue our dreams, attain our goals, and gain strength, healing, and empowerment from living life in nature, beyond expectations.
