Copyright Bootcamp with UAB Libraries

Join presenters Jeff Graveline and Dr. Marla Hertz for an engaging half-day intensive workshop designed to enhance your understanding of copyright law through a combination of lectures, discussions, and interactive learning activities.

This session will cover a range of essential topics, beginning with the history and origins of copyright, followed by foundational concepts that everyone in higher education should know. Participants will explore the intricacies of copyright, fair use, and open access, empowering them to navigate complex copyright scenarios confidently. Additionally, we will explore the intersection of AI and copyright law, including an update of recent litigation. 

Light breakfast and snacks will be provided. Optional pre-readings will be sent to participants one-week before the workshop. 

Registration is limited to 30 people.

Tentative schedule:

• 9-9:45 a.m.: Copyright Basics (what is/is not protected, exclusive rights, copyright formalities, authorship, duration)
• 9:45-10:30 a.m.: Copyright Exceptions (fair use, classroom performance, interactive fair use activity)
• 10:30-10:45 a.m.: Break
• 10:45-11:30 a.m.: Beyond the Basics (open access, Creative Commons licensing, interactive predatory publishing activity)
• 11:30 a.m.-noon: Copyright and AI
