I see three potential pathways I can see for who is hired to be the next Red Wings GM, and have provided a few names I've been researching throughout the day for each category.
Jim Nill, Dallas Stars GM
Hired to the Wings front office in 1994, he worked in Detroit until he left to become the Stars GM in 2013. He won the NHL's GM of the year award for 3 straight seasons from 2023-2025.
Eric Tulsky, Carolina Hurricanes GM
Pay him more than whatever cheap ass Tom Dundon is willing to pay. Maybe he'll promote one his five kids as GM since their names are already on the Stanley Cup.
Kris Draper, Detroit Asst. GM
Acquired by the Wings in the 1993-94 season, he joined Detroit's front office immediately as a special assistant to Ken Holland. In 2019 he was promoted to director of amateur scouting by new general manager (and former teammate) Steve Yzerman and in 2023 he was promoted to assistant general manager for the Red Wings.
Shawn Horcroff, Griffins GM
In 2016 Horcoff was named director of player development for the Detroit Red Wings. In 2022, he was named the assistant general manager for the Red Wings and the general manager of the Griffins.
Tyler Dellow, Carolina Hurricanes Asst. GM
For the last 2 seasons Dellow has been responsible for overseeing data analysis and compliance with the salary cap and CBA for Carolina. He held similar positions with New Jersey and Edmonton.
Dellow was previously a staff writer for The Athletic, covering the analytics side of hockey. He earned his law degree at the University of Toronto and practiced civil litigation in Toronto prior to working in hockey. He founded mc79hockey.com, a leading analytics-based hockey blog that helped bring data analysis into mainstream hockey discussion.
Scott White, Dallas Stars Asst. GM
Served as Jim Nill's right hand man since 2016. He’s also served as a pro scout and director of minor league operations. He has interviewed for GM vacancies in Toronto, Vancouver and Nashville.
Sam Ventura, Buffalo Sabers V.P.of Hockey Strategy and Research
Just 38 years old, has quite the diverse resume in hockey already:
Ventura is an affiliated faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Statistics & Data Science and a former Assistant Professor of Statistics at CMU, where he also received his PhD
Former Director of Hockey Operations and Director of Hockey Research for the Pittsburgh Penguins
Former assistant coach for Carnegie Mellon’s ice hockey team
Ventura has also "co-authored packages for open-source data collection and analysis, including nhlscrapr, nflscrapR, and spew, and he co-founded war-on-ice.com. He co-organizes the annual Carnegie Mellon Sports Analytics Conference."
Evan Gold, Former Boston Bruins Asst. GM
Recently stepped down from his role in Boston, considered to be a potential future NHL GM. Had been rumored as potentially joining the Maple Leafs staff.
What route do you want the Red Wings to go with their net GM? Which route do you think they will go?
