Now that Spring Quarter is here, it’s time to cast readers for “From Lyric Novel to Lyric Stage: Vikram Seth’s The Golden Gate as Novel-in-Verse and Opera-in-Progress.” The event itself will take place at the new Bing Concert Hall on May 30th, and will juxtapose:
--current and former students and Stegner Fellows reading passages from Vikram Seth's novel-in-verse
--video clips from a workshop version of the opera based on the novel
--the composer/librettist, Conrad Cummings, talking about the process of literary adaptation
--video clips of Vikram Seth weighing in on various topics
--Q&A with the audience
The text from the novel will be projected while the reading portions happen—so the audience can get a robust sense of the kinds of changes that take place when moving lyric novels to the lyric stage.
Event Schedule
The performance itself is Thursday, May, 30th, 2013 from 8-9:30 p.m. at the new Bing Concert Hall at Stanford (with a reception following). We'll do a walk-through/sound check with the full cast some time in the afternoon, will break early for dinner, and reconvene an hour before the performance.
The readers will also have a walk-through rehearsal with the director (John Henry Davis) on Wednesday, May 29th, from 6:15-7:15 in the Terrace Room (w/dinner provided).
