WHO ARE WE (in this "international house")?
We are 6+ people (see the group picture) w. various occupations: Scientists, international scholars/grad/medical students. Some of us toil in the local technological (and/or nontechnical) Salt Mines of the modern Silicon Valley Czars of Technology and Commerce.
We are greatly interested in the world, that storied global area outside boundaries of the USA, well known and understood by only a modest fraction of Americans.
COMMUTE DISTANCES TO LOCAL PLACES OF WORK AND STUDY
It's about 1 mile from here (a walk) to Bosch, Xerox PARC, VMWare, Roche, Veterans Administration Hospital/Medical Center, Stanford Blood Bank.
It's 2 miles or less to SAP software, Tesla, Varian, Stanford Research Parks, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Hewlett Packard, Box, Cloudera, Theranos and etc .
3-5 miles, depending (Nice bike path, bus or Foothill Expressway) to Stanford University and Foothill college. 4 miles to Google and about a hundred other similar work places.
There is ample nearby street parking along a greenery lined section of our street. Or we can provide you a bicycle An image of the bike path to Stanford, and its surrounding area is shown
MEDICAL STUDENTS Since 2005 we have had over a dozen medical students/ professionals (Stanford, and including many international attendees of Stanford's Physician Assistant program. Also medical staff at the Veterans' Administration Hospital and Stanford Blood Bank ).
(You can check mileage from Pomona Avenue and Arastradero, Palo Alto to your destination on Google or Mapquest, etc.) See map below showing bicycle path that goes from our house location through woods and on to Stanford: The bike path goes through woods tree lined streets, and avoids heavy traffic.
NEIGHBORHOOD AND HOUSE
Quiet neighborhood, abundant trees. See bike route on map Near Terman Park. One block from free tennis courts (in Terman Park).
House has Washer/Dryer, Cable TV. Wireless DSL internet. The house has an Apple TV with infinite-seeming film library and even more available on Amazon Prime on which we watch re-runs of things like PBS NOVA . The house also has e-systems computer with Linux OS and software (MS office, Adobe Acrobat etc etc) free for use by all in the house.
Also free for use by all in the house -- FREE INTERNATIONAL CALLING to most land telephones worldwide as well as USA via Skype (Don's Skype). People here have recently called rural Nepal, rural China (People's Republic) India and northern Russia near Murmansk. And all European countries.
SOLAR ELECTRICITY. This is also a solar electric house -- "blackout proof", by means of a 6 kilowatt peak power photovoltaic (sun powered) electric system and backup. We can go mostly off the local electric supply if we wish. Or if local power fails (as California power often did under delusional free market guidance exacerbated by corporate piracy [eg Enrons and the like] a decade ago).
Your housemates, who are grad students, professors, scientists, and thoughtful people from several continents, can be very interesting to talk with about many things.
THINGS WE ASPIRE TO:
Enjoy talking. But not about US football (at least much). Discuss our countries. Some of us are very interested in US foreign policy (perhaps a better term is the lack of understandable/ consistent and coherent policy). Several who are here also discuss "lofty and highfalutin" topics including science, energy and environment, biology, medicine, cosmology, artificial intelligence and the long term implications, etc. and blah blah.
We occasionally have multi-national pot-lucks (meals, social events with people bringing foods typical of different countries) and barbecues. These have been fun. And we sometimes have parties: See pics on the link at http://www.flickr.com/photos/bonzi-us/sets/72157605233507551/. As a consequence of our international makeup the captions happen to be in Italian. But you can pretty much figure them out.
Watching TV series and documentaries . Good movies. We already have "infinite channel" TV that comes to us courtesy of the US Media Oligarchy (Comcast/NBC) . Some good stuff gets through to us, though we acknowledge that what you'd call "good stuff" is a low fraction of the total from Comcast/NBC cable oligarchs. We can access an enormous range of movies via Apple TV and Amazon Prime (see next)
We also recently got an Apple giant screen TV. We can watch virtually anything via web links. Some of us recently watched (for example) "Dr. Strangelove" and the Public Broadcasting NOVA series on the time course of Astronomy and the development of telescopes since the time of Galileo Galilei. And the fascinating rccent discovery that the Neanderthals disppeared by becoming ancestors ancestors of present humans -- us.
And we discuss black holes. And Borat. And some of us actually know a little about Kazakhstan and President for Life Nursultan Nazarbayev, (appointed by himself - - - [three times, just in case]) and Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome Space Port (world's largest space port if you haven't been there).
EXPLORING NEARBY AND FARAWAY (USA) PLACES
If you like this sort of thing, some of us hike and go sightseeing to places like San Francisco and local attractions. People here can sometimes give you a ride. We have maps of many local and distant places (worldwide) and can get travel help for you from memberships of some of us in the American Automobile Association. People have come from (for some examples) Germany, Peru, Sweden, Belarus, Russia--Siberia and PR China and traveled widely while lving here.
You can hike around here in the woods or around big companies like Google, Intel, Facebook, Intuit etc and marvel at the billionaires' world-famous corporate palaces. Talk to us about the more inspiring local tours you can take .
OTHER -- MONEY / LEASE
$ 250 deposit, refundable. There is a limited (less than 1 page) lease, not restrictive but 30 day notice required..
