Vintage USA-Made Trek 8700 Composite Mountain Bike • Carbon Fiber Bonded Frame • 26" Wheels • Shimano Deore XT / DX 3x7 Drivetrain
Meet the bike that made 1990s mountain bikers do a double take. This is a USA-built Trek 8700 Composite, a rare bonded carbon fiber mountain bike in maroon/burgundy, from an era when carbon on a dirt bike was the stuff of daydreams. It has a full Shimano Deore XT and Deore DX 3x7 drivetrain, Rapidfire shifters, cantilever brakes, and tan-wall knobby tires that say "I have taste AND traction."
Why the Frame Is a Big Deal:
Most bikes back then were welded steel or aluminum tubes. The 8700 Composite took a different path: carbon fiber main tubes bonded (glued, on purpose, by professionals) into aluminum lugs, with aluminum rear stays. The idea was a frame that was light and stiff, with carbon soaking up trail chatter. At the time, this was the top of the line, the bike you stared at through the shop window and the one nobody forgot at the trailhead. It is still a conversation starter now, and you will probably get asked "wait, is that CARBON?" at least once a week. Yes. Yes it is.

Condition:
Good vintage condition with solid structural frame integrity. Paint and carbon show normal wear, minor scuffs, and some cosmetic paint chipping on the rear stay/chainstay areas, which is what 30-ish years of being a real bike will do. Shifters, brakes, and drivetrain components are intact and functioning. Sold as-is. An excellent retro mountain bike build, or a fast, unique urban commuter that will not blend in with the other bikes at the rack (but is also not a flashy newcomer).
A Little History:
Trek built this bike in the USA in the early 1990s, when the company was pushing hard to prove American-made carbon could compete at the highest level. It is a neat piece of mountain bike history that still rides. Fork holds air!
